2008

This year, 2008 is the 700th anniversary of the installation of the first vicar, and the first vicarage, in the parish at the heart of Taunton - St Mary Magdalene’s. Hundreds of people will pass by this Church every day on their way from Canon St car park to the shops and offices of modern day Taunton. The date we are celebrating is 1308 when King Edward II had just come to the throne and Taunton was a major centre for the production of wool and cloth. Trade was booming and the local wool barons and the Church, locally led by the Bishop of Winchester, amassed fortunes on the proceeds. The newly created vicar of St Mary Magdalene was paid handsomely..with an allowance of bread and ale, feed for his horse and an annual salary of £100. In the following 700 years many thousands have worshipped in the Church, married there, brought their children to be baptized and their loved ones to be buried. Countless people have poured out their fears and concerns, and have found solace, friendship and the love of God within the walls.
